The Acadian Free Republic Union membership referendum, 2016 was a referendum in Acadia on June 23, 2016. The referendum was to decide the future of Acadia in the Free Republic Union. In the end, Acadian citizens voted for to remain in the Free Republic Union.

History[edit]

The Free Republic Union was established in 2003, in the aftermath of three deadly wars, the First Hontanan War, the War of 2002, and the Goveruan-Antarctican War. At this time, Acadia was a small, weak country recovering from the Antarctic Revolution. To secure protection and trading opportunities for the new country, the first president of Acadia, Greg Cleanington, was one of the first to sign the Treaty of Dorkugal in 2003.

By 2015, many nationalist Acadians wanted more independence from the USA, and felt that Acadia was a powerful enough country to "go out on its own." They started a campaign called "Acadexit". With the popularity of the movement, the Acadian Conservative Party, which held a majority in the Acadian Parliament, agreed to a referendum, which was scheduled to be in summer 2016.
