Chinstrap, officially the Acadian Overseas Territory of Chinstrap, is an Acadian overseas territory southwest of the Ninja Archipelago. It was previously an independent country until it was annexed by Acadia in a referendum. However, the island has resented Acadian rule and has campaigned for independence.
History[edit]
Chinstrap was discovered in the 1990's by some fishermen stranded off course during a storm. They found the place suitable for living and soon advertised it in Antarctica. Many penguins moved to the new country, mostly soldiers from Colonial Antarctica looking for a new life.
After the Colonial Antarctica War, many more penguins moved to the country, to start a new life. The country also had immigrants from a bunch of different Antarctic countries who heard about the advertisements and immigrated to the country.
During its final years as a country, Chinstrap was a relatively poor country with an unstable economy based on fishing, and exporting what oil and gold they could find. For some reason, the huge deposits of gold and oil were not found.
In 2010, Acadia, a new country looking for colonies, offered a way out of Chinstrap's economic problems by becoming a colony of theirs. A referendum was held with 51% agreeing to Acadian rule. Almost as soon as the island became an Acadian territory, one after another good thing started to happen.
Later that year, gold was discovered on the island. Many penguins across Antarctica set out to find the gold, and found the island promising and stayed there, bringing their families with them. In 2012, oil was discovered off the coast of the island. Soon the island turned from poor to rich.
Government[edit]
Chinstrap's government is very similar to Gilneas, and also its mother country, Acadia. Chinstrap is almost completely independent to Acadia, with the exception of a military, and the fact that Chinstrap's and Gilneas's populations are included in the Acadian census.
Chinstrap has three branches of government, the executive branch, which consists of the governor and his cabinet. The Parliament, which makes bills, and and judicial branch, which has the final say in things when Parliament and the governor cannot agree.
Economy[edit]
Before Acadia intervention, Chinstrap was a poor country that relied on fishing and what gold they could find. There were also minimal amounts of factories across the island, which made items for export. After Acadia intervened, by what looked like luck, gold and oil was found. This started to increase exports, and steadily, the colony turned from poor to rich.
Culture[edit]
Chinstrap doesn't have much of a unique culture, unlike Acadia, which has a mix of Freezelandian, Puffish, Alemanian, and Francterran cultures in a melting pot, or Gilneas, which has a distinct Francterran culture. Chinstrap does have a fading Puffish culture, from the days of Colonial Antarctica, but it isn't very distinct of dominant. However, five years of Acadia rule has brought back Puffish culture to the island colony.
Geography[edit]
Chinstrap is a mostly flat island, with the Chinstrapion metro area covering 75% of the island. Outside the capital, forests are common. The Chinstrapion River, the main river, flows through the city of Chinstrapion. Outside the city, there are a few low hills, which are being flattened for housing developments for the growing island.
Transport[edit]
Before Acadian rule, there were few roads in Chinstrap, and even fewer paved roads. The only paved roads were in Chinstrapion, and even those weren't kept in good condition. However, when Acadia annexed the country, it started the process of paving the unpaved roads, and also built new ones. Still, Chinstrap has yet to have divided highways, making it the only colony besides Fort Cheese not to have one.
Trivia[edit]
- To show its sovereignty, unlike the flags of most Acadian colonies, which is an Acadian flag in the corner of a blue background, which is blue on both sides of a white center.
