"Anchors Aweigh" is a promotional single by Antarctican group Penguin Band. It features a guest appearance by pirate and musical artist Rockhopper. It was released as a standalone song and is not included on any album. The song was released on August 28, 2012 after the end of the Music Jam. In the Band's singles chronology it succeeds "Squidzoid and Heroes", the final single from their debut album The Four Penguins (2010), and is followed by "Better Days", the lead single from their second album Cosmic (2014).

Background[edit]

"Anchors Aweigh" was written by Stompin' Bob and Franky of the Penguin Band, with additional writing from Rockhopper. It was produced by Petey K. The song was created as a quick collaboration with Rockhopper at the request of the event planners of the Music Jam, an annual musical festival held in Club Penguin. The song was performed and premiered live for the first time as a performance of the Band's first set with no intention of being released. After positive feedback the song was released on to iceTunes as a promotional single. The live performance was officially uploaded to PengTube as the "music video".

Reception[edit]

"Anchors Aweigh" sold very well across Antarctica, being a very successful single for a song that was not promoting anything. The sales, however, did not stop critics from giving less than favorable responses. Many critics called the song "bland", "annoying", and "unoriginal". After around a month after its opening on the market, sales of "Anchors Aweigh" plummeted and have never recovered. The song is considered one of the Penguin Band's poorer songs by many and one of their few singles to not chart at number 1 in the USA. Luckily, it does not have album single status.
