Quendi are a branch of High Penguins and part of the family of penguins, though Quendi can be considered a different species than High Penguins. They are known for their ability to ride dragons, along with their use of magic. Like High Penguins, Quendi are considered more beautiful, are taller, and have immortality, thus they live longer than normal penguins.
History[edit]
It is unknown how the Quendi came to settle on the Stepstones, which is hundreds of miles off the migration course from Valnor to Antarctica that was taken by many High Penguins. However, it is suggested that since navigation tools were less accurate at the time, the High Penguins unknowingly drifted off the main course, where they landed in the isles. Others state that penguins settled on the isles even earlier, possibly when High Penguins were still making their migration from the continent of South America, and that while many continued on to Valnor, a group of penguins stayed behind in the islands, making their home their, and eventually setting up a society.
As the Quendi discovered agriculture and domestication, and started to settle down, no longer needing to move around to hunt and gather. They began to build villages, which would grow into cities. Over time, a culture formed on the island, with the penguins inventing a language called Quenya, and inventing writing, poetry, and song. It was also around this time that the penguins made a discovery that would change the future. In the mountains and volcanoes of the islands, the Quendi discovered dragons and their eggs. Gradually, the penguins learned how to ride and breed the dragons. Around this same time, the Quendi also discovered their magical abilities.
By Year 0, when recorded history began, numerous city-states, ruling small parts of the island, had sprung up. Dragons were now being used in warfare, and could burn down cities to ashes. Some of the Quendi also because wizards or warlocks, who could wield magic more powerfully than most Quendi. It was also during this time that they began to look for other lands, to see if they were alone in the world or not. They began to build large ships, capable of making long sea voyages. Some of the explorers discovered new lands, establishing colonies to the south and on the mainland.
