The Republic of Ed Island was a federal republic which came into existence in 1916 after the monarchy stepped down and lasted until 1942. Throughout its entire existence, the Republic was rife with corruption, economic inflation, and political extremism, with both left- and right-wing paramilities often fighting openly in the streets. The Republican government was never very popular among the population, as it was notoriously unstable, and brought one of the worst periods of economic instability in Ed Island's history. Despite the Republic allowing citizens to have a greater role with the government, many saw it as a step back from the previous government.

The Republic of Ed Island was formed after the monarchy was pressured to step down in a bloodless revolution known as the Sotha Decree. The first initial months of the Republic were chaotic, as several factions within the country appeared, including Snowviet-backed Communists, the Monarchist Freikorps, the fascist Wulfen, and paramilitary Republicans attempting to maintain order. Despite the occasional street wars between these factions, the Republican government managed to stay in power until its dissolution in 1942. Much of this 'success' was accredited to the military, who often waged war with these paramilitaries in order to maintain peace in the country.
