"Dance or Else..."

"Silence" is the debut single by Telephonian DJ, dancer and singer, Meaghan. It is also the first single from her debut album, "Camouflage". It was released on January 5, 2010 in Tel Ah Phon and Club Penguin, then released elsewhere the next week. Instead of releasing on a Monday, it released mid-week on Tuesday. It is mainly an instrumental song, but Meaghan delivers some short verses between each part.

"Silence" is an explosive power pop ballad. It starts with a piano solo, then changes to guitars and bass. The song had great success.

The song was the first track to be written and produced off "Camouflage" in February 2009. She wrote three quarters of it herself, with help from her manager, Childpengu1. She had produced it herself too in the same month, and they kept it for her album. This song was inspired by the absence of happiness in life, as stated by Meaghan. It is also inspired by being in silence with someone you haven't met. Meaghan stated: "I didn't just want songs that had all of my vocals on it - I wanted an album with some instrumental songs too. This one still has vocals on it, like all the others. Sometimes it's just best to let the music sink into the listener, not the vocals." She then announced her album in mid-2009. During that time, more tracks were produced and written. One minute of the song was leaked in August 2009, but the source became confidential on the Internet and wasn't spread. The song was announced in December 2009 and then uploaded to Meaghan's official PengTube channel on Christmas Day. It got over 6 million views on the same day and by New Years it had over 10 million views. In an interview, Meaghan stated she was thinking about adding lyrics to the song, and also stated she first wasn't thinking about it because it was the first single, but in the end she decided to add a few vocals.

Meaghan has performed this song several times, mostly of the times she dances to the song, and other times she plays it. At "The Camouflage Tour" she appeared with glow-in-the-dark costumes and dancing, and with a wig that also glowed in the dark.

Critical reception[edit]

Raymond Vegas of "Music Spy" gave the song a very positive review:

I have to say, it's a nice start for Meaghan. I've heard about her before - I've even been to some of her gigs at the Night Club. She can sing, she can dance - it's perfect, right? I heard about this song near Christmas 2009, and I really thought about it. Could this song be a hit? Can Meaghan gain fame for this song? It was then uploaded to PengTube, and I was amazed. It was the most original piece of music I had ever heard. First off, it wasn't just a song with an instrumental and vocals mixed into it, it was more of an instrumental than vocals.

There's still a few vocals in there. It's a very nice track. Buy it now if you can. 4/5 stars

Chart performance[edit]

The song charted at number 1 in Tel Ah Phon on January 10, 2010 and remained number 1 for five weeks. It was in the Top 40 for 37 weeks, and in the Top 100 for 71 weeks. On the same day, it charted number 1 in Club Penguin and remained number 1 for three weeks. It remained in the Top 40 for 40 weeks. On January 17, 2010 it charted number 1 in UnitedTerra and stayed their for two weeks, number 3 in the USA, number 8 in Freezeland, number 2 in Pengolia, number 14 in Puffle'and and number 7 in Dorkugal. It stayed in the Top 40 for more than 30 weeks in all charts.

Music video[edit]

The video premiered on Meaghan's site, then straight after it was uploaded to PengTube on New Years. It was directed by Yusei, Childpengu1 and Meaghan. The video starts with Meaghan coming out of her igloo, walks to the Night Club and starts laughing about everyone there. Then she goes to a pool party. The end is with Meaghan getting pushed -by other penguins- to a pool, and then Tesha Longline appears, laughs and carelessly throws a cake to Meaghan that is still on the pool.
