The Snowjave Rangers are the primary defense force for the Ed Islandian territory of Snowjave. Due to Snowjave's cold desert climate, the Rangers are adequately equipped for extreme weather conditions.

History[edit]

Prior to 1903 and Snowjave's incorporation into Imperial Ed Island, the island was protected by a militia of volunteers who sought to bring law and order to the desert wastes. These militiamen later became known as the Desert Rangers after bringing justice to several infamous criminals. The Desert Rangers were treated as Snowjave's official military and police force from their conception in 1863 to the Treaty of Vega officially naming Snowjave as a territory of Ed Island. As Snowjave's military, the Desert Rangers were officially placed under the jurisdiction of the Ed Island Army, where they were renamed to the Snowjave Rangers. Other than official military training by officers of the EIA, the Snowjave Rangers were never considered more than a territorial defense force and were rarely called on to serve in outside conflicts. Despite this, many Rangers fought in the Khanzem War, and the vast majority remained loyal to the Republic of Ed Island during the Wulfen War.

Prior to and during the Ed-Snowinn War, the Rangers operated their U-boat fleet against Snowinn shipping lines, preventing many ships from docking in Snowinian Ed Island. During the push into Snowinn-held territory, Snowjave was a staging ground for one-third of the invasion, landing in Sudentor and forcing Snowinn forces out.

Equipment[edit]

The majority of Ranger weaponry and equipment was designed to be simple to manufacture, yet hardy enough to withstand the harsh desert conditions.

Designation Role Cartridge Description
Pistols and Sidearms
M1920 Sidearm .45 Auto The standard-issue sidearm for the Rangers, all M1920s produced in Snowjave have a white puffle crest embedded in the grips.
M1889 Sidearm .44 Magnum A .44 caliber revolver carried by officers and elite Rangers.
Rifles and SMGs
M1895 Service Rifle .45-70
.30-06
A lever-action rifle designed in 1895, the M1895 features a five-round internal box magazine fed by stripper clips. M1s are fitted with full-length handguards and are capable of accepting bayonets, unlike other lever-action rifles. Early M1985s fired the .45-70 round, the same as the M1973 prior, but after 1908 production changed to the more powerful .30-06 cartridge. While largely phased out for self-loading rifles, it is not uncommon to see Snowjave police and other non-military personnel carrying the M1895.
M1936
M1947
Service Rifle .30-06 The M1936 is a piston-operated semi-automatic rifle developed in Snowjave, firing the .30-06 round from an 8-round en bloc clip. A later variant of the rifle later designated the M1947 gave the rifle a detachable box magazine and select-fire capabilities, though soldiers rarely used the latter due to the high recoil of .30-06 making it nearly impossible to control.
M1969
(w/ launcher)
Service Rifle 5.56x45mm A Snowjave-built variant of the Antarctican M16 rifle, M1969s utilize wooden furniture and a non-reciprocating side charging handle as well as a fixed carry handle in order to make the rifle have similar handling characteristics to the StG-3. They fire the same 5.56 cartridge as the originals, rather than the shorter 8mm Kurz cartridge used by the EIA. M1969s are capable of mounting the M18 grenade launcher, which fits below the barrel and replaces the handguard with a metal heatshield.
M1980 Submachine Gun 9x19mm A dedicated SMG platform formerly used by the EIA as the MP 80 prior to the adoption of the smaller MP 02. Surplus MP 80 units (designated as M1980) were given to the Rangers when a request was made for durable SMGs for the harsh Snowjave climate.
