The Triple Festival of Sport is one of the most popular events in the sporting calendar of Antarctica, where Polaris and Mattress Village with the addition of permanent host Aquarius compete in a multi-sport event against each other. Events are typically hosted officially as preseason friendlies to each sport's governing body. The current sports are Ice hockey, Baseball (both 'Modern baseball' and PASTORIUM events), Basketball, American football, Lacrosse (both field and box), Football (soccer), Cricket and Rugby Union as events at this point. The Baseball and Cricket events are hosted around February-March while the rest are around July-August. All events are currently team events and plans for more individual are in. It is also possible for the status of Aquarius being the permanent host changed. Each sport has separate male and female events. Several sports have been planned for the future; Cycling, Rowing, Kayaking/Canoeing, Athletics and Wrestling being potential future sports.

Background[edit]

Events[edit]

All sports are played in a league format; each team plays each other twice, with 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. Rugby union uses the bonus point system and in Cricket each team plays under international test cricket against each other once, it is the most runs scored in total.

Teams[edit]

There are several rules to the team composition. Typically the teams are from each city's own minor league All-Star team, especially in the case of Mattress Village, who have very few professional sportsman. For example, the Polaris Hockey League All-Stars, the Southeastern Trans-Antarctic Hockey League All-Stars (for Aquarius) and the Uno Valley Minor Hockey Leagye All-Stars team compete in this. In recent years, professional athletes playing in Aquarius' and Polaris' teams, such as the Aquarius Ranger or the Polaris Pines have been selected to compete, along with junior and college athletes playing in the city teams and athletes who were born or had lived in the cities for a part of their life are allowed to take part. Usually Aquarius and Polaris benefit from this, with the exception of PASTORIUM baseball, where the baseball players from other cities often get confused on the rules.

Hosting controversy[edit]

Aquarius being the sole host has attracted critics from some creatures. A minor leaguer, Toby Johnson, playing in the Uno Valley Minor Hockey League who was selected for the team from 2007-2008 has claimed that 'we see signs of no morality; you don't even have to wear motorbike helmets! Even Polaris makes you wear helmets'. Many Polaris and Mattress Village athletes agree that it is unfair that Aquarius should hold permanent hosting rights. There have been calls for hosting to alternate between each city but this has been unpopular to spectators, athletes, politicians and the media. A suggestion is that more representatives from other municipalities and cities are allowed to enter. Club Penguin Island has made a bid for All-Star teams Club Penguin Sports Association leagues to participate, with hosting switching between Aquarius and Club Penguin. Shiverpool, the Polar District and Shield City have also applied to join and host.

Trivia[edit]

  • Aquarius is the host due to it's apparent 'Libertarian' and 'in-between status' in comparison to Polaris' liberal views and Uno Valley's conservative.
  • Libertarianism is pro-business and fiscally conservative but morally liberal; liberalism favours more regulation and encourages more spending whilst conservatives are more for a more a traditional moral society.
