User:Kwiksilver/Skype conference
Gentlementlemen. It is I.
It's school holidays at the moment and I thought we should make some attempt to revive For Great Justice. Everything else seems to have failed, so I propose something new:
I'm pretty sure most of you have skype. Well, it would be great if we could all exchange usernames and the like, and set up a conference call so we can discuss articles and the wiki's future. Plus, it'd be great to talk to some of you! :)
If you haven't got Skype already then you really should, it's better than MSN or FB chat any day.
So I'll need a quick response on this, then I'll figure out a time that works for everybody.
We'll be talking about:
- Wikia Catastrophe
- Nightmare Epic
- Power4U
- Pie War
- Character developments
- Randomity
So peoples, what do you think?--Sir Kwiksilver of TARDIS-What kind of hallway is this? Is this your house?

Updates and Answers[edit]
I'm not going to edit every single reply in the discussion box and some people are asking the same questions, so I'm going to answer most of them here. First of all I'd like to say I'm impressed with the amount of people who responded. Thanks guys :) Right, down to the answering....
- Will we be using webcams on the chat?
Very common question so I'm answering it first. The answer is NO. We will be in a conference call, and most versions of skype are incompatible with multiple webcams. Also, webcams mean more of our precious data usage is chewed up. But most importantly, webcams invade privacy. Most people don't want their faces shown, even to people they know (bit broad considering we're all just random people on the internet, but whatever). If you want to reveal your identity that's alright, but it may be best to keep it private and it won't work on the call anyway. It will be a voice and text only chat, text because there are some people whose parents refuse to allow them to speak.
- Can't we just use IRC for this sort of thing?
IRC I consider inferior in two ways: One, afk is a big issue. Even though there may be seven people in the chat, two may actually be paying attention. On Skype, you can see who is typing and who is online, and when you're speaking with voice you are always available. Two, voice communicates ideas better. Some people have great ideas but they're incapable or won't bother to type. And just like in IRC, you can private chat with a user but send images and other files across. Skype is more efficient.
- But I'll be revealing my identity!
You don't have to use your real name in a skype account. Obviously, like anything on the internets, you can use a fake name. I'm choosing to reveal my name to you guys, but you don't have to do the same. I respect your right of privacy.
- How are we going to do this anyway?
We'd have to find a time convenient with everyone, or we could do mini-chats by region. We'll work it out, anyway.
Well that's most questions answered. A new discussion is open at the bottom of the page for any more questions and queries you may have.
Have a good evening!

I have skype, but I really don't see what the difference between it and IRC is, unless you actually call each other.
On the subject of calling each other, I'd like to participate, but my parents would probably say no if asked. On the other hand, they never said I had to ask about adding skype buddies (heck, I add all these people on facebook that they don't know, giving them access to some of my PI), but I feel like I should. --THE SHEEP! |FIGHTTHEPOWER!

I have one, but I'm not using it, mainly because WE HAVE IRC FOR CHATTING. Yes, you can talk to CPFW friends on Skype. But for discussions. USE THE IRC FOR REALTIME GROUP CHATS. --refractor welcome to I N C E P T I O N<staff /> 12:23, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Well, I don't have a webcam. However, I do have a Skype account. Is it possible that we can just use our voices instead of faces? I'd be happy to go. When is it? We've got people all over the world and in different time zones. -- Triskelle3 Talk to me! 15:39, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Agreed with Andrew and Refractor. IRC is best for this kind of thing. And besides, I'm not about to reveal my identity, anyway. Yours Truly, Explorer 767 (THIS IS A COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME) v • e 18:53, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I do have Skype, but look at my userpage for my age. Will be the only reason why I can't come. Don't think you would let *look at my userpage*-year-olds in the chat. --12yz12ab 23:55, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
The offical skype client is a turd anyways. I have no concerns about privacy, but about the fact we could use IRC. IRC uses virtually no bandwidth, we can all use it (and will/do already) without installing the crap known as the skype client, it's more private, no hearing each other's squeaky voices, etc. IRC was built for text chat in real time with several people, skype not so much --refractor welcome to I N C E P T I O N<staff /> 18:29, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

This seems like a half-decent idea for anybody who is willing to come. I was only recently in a 5-man conference with others who I had only known from watching their videos and vice versa. At first it's a little slow, obviiously, but now after a bit you become really natural with it. The thing is, I don't seem to see the point of it over IRC. With more than 5 people as there probably will be, discussing will be hard, and chatting with Skype via text is no better than in IRC.
Furthermore, you don't really need to talk in voice, people are fine over text. It's your choice though, there'll be no harm in doing this anyways. {{SUBST:User:Tigernose/sig}} 01:37, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
