User blog:Agent Johnson/Minecraft Server?

What I've noticed is that a lot of us, quit users in particular, play Minecraft. With this in mind (and with more money in my pocket ;)), I was thinking of creating a 24/7 Minecraft server, which would either be ran on my computer (it'll be a few months though, since that's when my new Alienware computer comes and I don't think an Intel I3 HP Pavilion can run a server) or with a server hosting company (namely MCProHosting). In traditional Wiki spirit, it'll be the community that decides the host, the plugins, whether we have a whitelist (if we want to keep it Wiki/Network exclusive), the name (I don't think we should call it Club Penguin Wiki Network Minecraft Server), will it be funded by donations etc? Most of us play on different servers and have different experience, with some servers with Factions or iConomy, with different rules etc. Please note that I don't want any official endorsements by the Network or any Wikis; this will simply be a server designed by Network editors.

This is what I have in mind:

  • We use Bukkit, since I have experience using it on a server I used to Administrate, plus it has a larger community and a more diverse choice of plugins. From what I hear, lag tends to happen less often.
  • We should use MCProHosting. It won the Best Minecraft Server Host 2011 (from who I don't know), servers from all over the world use it and it's cheaper on me.
  • User groups: Guest (for recently joined users), Builder (for registered users), Helper (basically Moderator, but come on, Helper sounds much more friendlier), Staff (I like cool names like that - oh and basically Administrator). There'll be no Senior Staff, Owner etc groups, although I'll be able to demote any power abusers via the console. I'm thinking of a group of Network editors and potentially Donators, but at this point, this is 100% paid by me.
  • Let's not make it too complicated. What I hate is overloaded servers, so there will be a server limit of 20 - 30. We may apply a whitelist so that only Network editors may come on if it either gets overloaded or if we're that elitist. Sure, have a Spleef Arenas, PVP Arenas, Mob Arenas, Capture the Flag Arenas, Admin Shops but let's not ruin the spawn by making it some ugly 10,000 by 10,000 spawn city with Gold and Diamond roads, giant statues, Mossy Cobblestone walls etc. The best spawns tend to be small little towns with untouched wilderness surrounding it and there, you can build your towns, cities, mines, whatever.
  • Server will be PVP (this doesn't really matter since people rarely attack each other out of the blue, unless they're from factions at war or are playing some game with PVP), griefing won't be allowed and we should have some kind of factions and economy plugin.
  • It'll be primarily SMP, although we could have a Creative area like I've seen in many servers.

So, give me your thoughts.--John (talk|blog|contribs) 12:36, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
