User blog talk:Agent Johnson/Minecraft Server?

I would recommend posting on this CPW thread.--John (talk|blog|contribs) 12:45, 22 July 2012 (UTC)–

I'm going to go ahead and pitch in my own 2 cents.

  1. Bukkit is a definite YES.
  2. I think Beastnode is a better deal. For one thing, their site doesn't make me tear my hair out. However, I *may* instead be able to provide a VPS (prgmr.com, most likely, but a slim chance it could be Linode). No guarantees on that, however.
  3. Too much bureaucracy, how about just user and admin?
  4. Agreed.
  5. Plugins I'm recommending for this task are Towny and Essentials Eco.
  6. Okay.

I've done a fair amount of the work already on a personal server called devnullcraft, but I'll be glad to clean it up a bit and hand it over to you if you want. Tux (*** SERVICE NOTIFICATION *** clubpenguinwiki.info IS UP) 18:21, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Being an avid player of Minecraft I would opt to utilize Bukkit since there are a plethora of plugins available for it. However, I believe we could go on creative, and even install plugins such as WorldEdit. I also believe that we could to adventure maps frequently, depending on the number of people online. We must also consider that there may be upwards of ten users, and it may not be able to be run by one user on their own. -- Sanchonachos Republicans:Stop Whining. 03:39, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

That's why I'll be 100% paying for MCProHosting (sorry Tux but MCProHosting is just cheaper), unless you want to donate (but that won't give you extra commands). At this point in time Aero, I want to focus on having a small server, which considering the interest, will probably be capped at 10-20 at this point. If it expands, then 30 is the maximum. We could use Multiverse to create a Creative world and maybe an Adventure world (I'm skeptical on Adventure worlds), but at this point I can't really afford to run three separate servers. Towny, Essentials, UltimateArena, MobBounty, MCJobs, TradeMod, HawkEye, WorldGuard (only to be used on spawn, key buildings - and yes, lava, fire, whatever will be enabled), VanishNoPacket (useful for Admins to stalk griefers and gather enough evidence to block - I've used a program like this before, very useful), CraftIRC and WorldEdit are currently in my mind. Maybe CAuth, if we want to make it a cracked server. Of course, there will be other Admins apart from me.--Network staffJohn (talk|blog|contribs) 12:27, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

  • MC Jobs's default config is stupid.
  • No cracked, k?
  • Install a permissions plugin: PemissionsEx or PermissionsBukkit.
  • I know that Ced1214 is a WorldEdit genius, he can make things HAPPEN.

"No cracked, k?" NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO D: --not amigopen 06:48, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

  • I have to agree with you [Tuxed] on MCJobs, especially with all the Taxes and Bulldozer (taxes and bulldozer makes sense with Towny but not for destroying a flower in the wilderness).
  • I forgot about permissions, can I have more information on the differences?
  • And Ced is a WorldEdit genius? Challenge accepted.
  • [@Amigopen] Cracked servers are less secure than premium servers. Registration only fixes the fact that your name can't be used by anyone else; it is still pretty insecure.
  • Also, names: WikiCraft, if we have the site hosted on TropicalWikis, cause then we have a reason to be called WikiCraft. MCPenguin maybe, to keep the CPWN references alive. Or what's wrong with AnythingCraft?--Network staffJohn (talk|blog|contribs) 07:13, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

There's a pre-built server package I have a link to somewhere. You'll just need to change the world(s) and plugins. I'll put the link when I find it.

  • Deal With It, but it works. It has WorldGuard, with no ice melting or firespread. Also, I've been working on a Club Penguin Island map for a while in Worldpainter. Links will happen. Eventually.
  • Wait a second... Let's not make it too complicated. What I hate is overloaded servers, so there will be a server limit of 20 - 30. We may apply a whitelist so that only Network editors may come on if it either gets overloaded or if we're that elitist. That's exactly my server. I can handle a 30-player limit hosted on my own computer. I can do it. I am the RED Spy EDFan Logo.png I'm scout! Rainbows make me cry!
  • Are you sure? Can you send me your DxDiag and your full specification to me? Plus, this will be 24/7 and uptime will be consistent?--Network staffJohn (talk|blog|contribs) 20:44, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
    • Well, I'm going to have to back out. There's a lot of things that would stop me from doing this. 1.3 is coming next week, it'll take forever for some of the plugins to update, and I can't have it up 23.9/7, but, I can keep it how it is now. Right now, it's more of a private "screw around" server. I can let people on, I just have to trust them. I won't hesitate to ban someone. Sorry, but that's how it is. I want to, but I can't, due to limitations. I could handle it, it's just personal stuff stopping me. Sorry, friend. I am the RED Spy EDFan Logo.png I'm scout! Rainbows make me cry!

I don't have any machines that can remain on 24/7, run Debian and Java and not blow up, except for olimar (but are you sure? slooooow wiki and server, plus 768MB and a single core Pentium 4 is not very good for an MC server). However, I have enough bandwidth available to host around 12 players, and my i5 rig will come as a Christmas gift, and I can likely leave that on 24/7. That's fine. I'll likely host it with MCProHosting. I think a Grass Plan (aka 15 player cap) would be the best option at the moment; 15 allows us to see how many non-CPWN editors are interested and costs about £6.40 a month, which equates to $9.40. £6.40 is pretty much my pocket money per week with £3.60 left over, so I'll easily host this. Taking of non-CPW editors, I don't want to put on a whitelist but should we post our server on the forums, Planet Minecraft or one of those server list sites. Finally, for names I'm thinking of MCPenguin to keep with our CPW references. However, it could be WikiCraft, it you let me have a wiki on the server with TropicalWikis. It'll allow builders to contribute ideas easier and create pages for their towns and all. If you have any other name suggestions, I'd love to hear them.--Network staffJohn (talk|blog|contribs) 23:00, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
