Valnorian

Valnorian is one of the many languages spoken in the Club Penguin Fanon Universe, called Vhalnellen in Valnorian. The tongue was in origin the speech of the clans of High Penguins living on Tol nAglorndë in Valnor. Vhalellen translates as simply "speech". THe majority of the words in Valnorian have been in use for thousands of years, with only little differences in the phonology, grammar, and vocabulary of Valnorian. One of the main changes has been the transition from Valnorian script to the Latin alphabet. Despite its age, Valnorian is still a living language.

History

Valnorian evolved from the dialects of the Valn'rii tribes on Aglarond in Valnor. It eventually became the standard, official tongue, with a reformed writing system. This eventually became known as Aglarondian Valnorian and was the most common in the Valnorian family. There were also other dialects, which eventually evolved into Classical Valnorian, around the years 300BC - 100AD. Then came Exilic Valnorian, spoken in Antarctica from 100AD - 1300AD. Classical Valnorian was replaced by Late Valnorian, and during this time Valnor was destroyed. Exilic Valnorian evolved into modern Valnorian between the 1200s and 1400s. Valnorian began to die out in the late 1800s, but revived during the Khanzem due to renewed pride in High Penguins and their history, and it was also used as a stealth language. Valnorian still lives to this day, and modern Valnorian is similiar to Classical Valnorian in many aspects, with the main changes being in spelling and phonology.

Usage

Freezeland

Valnorian is learned at an early age by all penguins in Freezeland, along with English and Penguinian. Valnorian is the official language of the monarchy, while the official languages of the government are English and Penguinian. Just as Northfold is a mostly Penguinian speaking area, there are pockets throughout the country called Vhallení where Valnorian is the spoken language.

On the 2009 Freezelandian Census, 24% of the population claimed to be fluent or "on an intermediate level", while 17% uses it "at least twice a week" outside of the school system. The highest numbers of speakers were in southern Northfold and in northern Snowbourne. There is also call to establish an official Vhallení in Frostborough, in the west end of the city.

Archet

Though it has no official status, Valnorian is estimated to be used by about 27% of creatures in Archet. Though there was no box to tick on the census forms, on the last census many penguins wrote in Valnorian. The speakers are mostly centred in the north part of the region. It is also interesting to note that Srootish (Žrutka) is also spoken by a relatively same amount of penguins.

Trans-Antarctica

There are two small areas with many Valnorian speakers in Trans-Antarctica. This is mostly due to the fleeing of Ardonians to the mountains during the Khanzem, and with them brought their language. The Trans-Antarctic dialect slightly varies in spelling and sound.

Antarctic Peninsula

There are small pockets of Valnorian speakers here.

Eastshield

Along the coast there is a small area with a growing number of speakers.

Grammar

Valnorian's word order is typically free, but this can vary in some situations. There is no gender in modern Valnorian. Valnorian has a vigesimal counting system, meaning it is based off of twenties (so, sixty four would translate as four and three twenties). Valnorian has four cases: accusative, posessive, vocative, and genitive.

Nouns

As a general rule, all nouns start with a consanant. Contrary to many auxiliary languages which have fairly simple systems of grammatical number, Valnorian nouns can have up to three numbers: singular, general plural ("plural 1"), particular/partitive plural ("plural 2").

Not all nouns can have the three numbers; some are pluralia tantum, having no singular variant for referring to a single object (like scissors in English), as dárat "goods (things for sale, or the things that you own)"; some other nouns, especially monosyllabic, use only one of the two plurals judged the most aesthetic by the speaker.

The plural is formed by a suffix to the subjective form of the noun.

For plural 1 the suffix is -í or -t (depending of the type of the noun, the precise rules vary by region). For plural 2 the suffix is -lí.

For posession of an object, the pronoun of the person who owns it goes after the object. So, his snowball would be ninláđat (snowball- ninláđ, he -at)

Adjectives

Adjectives appear only in -a, -ë, -o (rare), and -n (stem nearly always -nd) ; halin "dear", pl. halindi.

Valnorian adjectives may be freely used as nouns.

Verbs

Verbs are fairly regular. There are only about 10 irregular verbs in modern Valnorian. Verbs will always end in either -yw, -in, or -at. Each ending has the same conjugations, unlike natlangs such as French or Spanish. Verbs are conjugated by person and time (who did it, when did it happen).
