Welcome to our wiki's tools page! These programs (most are free) are recommended by the users of the wiki for helping you edit, draw images, and to enhance your browsing experience.

Email and Word Processing

Try Hotmail or Gmail (Google Mail) for email.

• Use ISP email as a last resort. This is the failsafe in case of parents. It will be like @nbnet.nb.ca or @charter.net.

• Sometimes you need to copy the article for safekeeping. Word and other word processors aren't built for the task of saving wikicode, so use a simple text editor like Notepad, Gedit, or Nano. They come with computers.

Web Browsers

Each web browser has it's own advantages and disadvantages, and which browser you like best depends entirely upon your personal taste.

All these will work on several OSes, except for Safari.

• Apple Safari - Safari is intended for use on a mac, and not recommended at all on Windows. Overall a very 'meh' browser with nothing special about it.
• Google Chrome - the fastest web browser you can get, Google Chrome is all about speed, stability and ease of use. If all you want to do is get around the web quickly with minimal fuss or complexity, then Chrome is for you.
• Mozilla Firefox - Firefox is legendary for it's advanced customization and compatibility with many OSes, even obscure ones. It's also fairly fast and runs on all operating systems there is. It's only problem is that it might get chubby with a lot of extensions and tabs open.
• Opera - Opera is a good browser, with good customization, a minimal footprint on your system, excellent web standards support, and overall very powerful..

Videos, Sound, and Animation

PowerPoint and other presentation programs are okay for animation, though Flash is more high quality (but also more expensive).

• Adobe Flash - The best animation program out there, but very expensive and somewhat complicated.
• Microsoft PowerPoint - comes with Microsoft Office. It is a presntation app, so it was not intended for animations, but should work fine for animating. It is OK for animating. Ninjinian uses this for effects on images and recommends it as a picture-editing software aswell.
• LibreOffice Impress - Not as good as PowerPoint or Flash. However, unlike the other options it is free and works on Linux distros as well.

Images

While MS Paint is easy to use, it's less then impressive. Here are some tools to spice up your drawings.

• Paint.net - Paint.Net is similar to MS Paint, but far more powerful and easy to use. Only for Windows.
  • Pinta is basically this for other OSes.
• The GIMP - which is a download, and is like Photoshop, but kinda hard to use at first. If you try though, it is ludicrously powerful. It also has thousands of extensions and brushes that you can install, and it can even use PhotoShop brushes!
• PhotoFiltre - a lightweight graphics editor for Windows. Not very powerful, but fits on a USB stick, is pretty speedy and allows you to save PNGs on older versions of Windows.
• Fireworks can produce vector and raster graphics but is $299.

Vector Graphics

Unlike other editors, which are bitmap editors focusing on pixels, these are shape-based, and have the advantage of having maniuplating shapes with minimal effort and most importantly, resizing will not make images ugly.

• Inkscape - the best free vector graphics program there is, Inkscape's images look good even when resized and zoomed in, and while it is hard to master, it is extremely useful for drawing flags.

• Google Translate - nothing better, unless the language isn't there.

• Convert English to Morse Code - because most of us can't understand what Herb Tacet says.

• Convert English Numbers to Roman Numerals - because it's there.

• Universal Currency Converter - it can conver any currency to any currency. It also runs the Gold, Silver, and PLATINUM standards.

• Image Editoranator - probably one of the best online items ever, this allows you to do almost anything to a picture, even rotate it by 10, 20, 30 ect. degrees in either direction.

• Convert English to Latin - excellent for taxonomy and High Penguin spells.

• Universal Converter Converter - this thing can convert images to other formats, audio to .ogg and other formats, video to gif or even extract sounds. About the only thing it CAN'T DO is download YouTube videos.
  • Please write instructions for it.

• Hexadecimalanator - ever wanted to color a template? Open this nifty chart and find a color that suits your fancy. Copy the six digit code typed in that color, open your template, and paste the code with a # sign in front of it.

• Sumo Paint - it's like an online deluxe version of PhotoShop on steroids. It can open files from your computer and asve them there too. It's got so many features (even layers) that I don't know what to do with it.

• THE FLAGGANATOR!!! - my most requested item, put your image on a flag!

• World History - if you need parody inspiration, this is the place for it. When I took History Class on my homeschool console, they gave this website as a link on every chapter. Here's some of the examples of its work... Genghis Khan and the Mongols, which is where I was inspired to write Penghis Khan. The French Revolution, which I wanted to parody, but lack a clue of what to do.

• Percentage Calculator - for calculating percents.

• DIY Metric Equivalents - if you live in the USA, you're using the Imperial System (feet, quarts, miles, tons, pounds)... you are also the only nation left on the earth who does so, and you're going to need the ding-dong Metric System. Bleh. This isn't automatic, it's do-it-yourself. Break out the calculator, you're going to need it.

ZapWire's Reccomendations

• You can animate PNGs like GIFs: Download this tiny piece of Java, and U GOT UR PNGS IN MAH ANIMATION. Remember animated PNGs only display in Firefox and Opera, and rename the .apng to .png.

Explorer's Reccomendations

• PowerPoint Heaven -- A great site for PowerPoint animation tips.
• Metric Conversions -- This site has everything you need to convert those ding-dong Imperial units to their superior Metric counterparts -- and back!
• Morse Code Translator -- Not only does this UBER LEET EPIC WIN translator translate English into Morse Code and vice versa, it even plays the Morse Code for you! Extremely superior!
• Firefox and Chrome are my recommended browsers. I strongly recommend Firefox because it is faster than Internet Explorer, is more customizable, and the latest version, 3.5, supports audio and video clip formats, so you don't have to download a Xiph codec to be able to play an OGG file from the wiki -- it'll play on the browser itself!
• HTML Coloring Wheel -- This thing has over 4,096 (or is it 4,069?) HTML colors and their respective codes. Select a color from the wheel and copy and paste the code where you need it.
• Inkscape is my recommended picture creator. It has extremely powerful tools, yet simple to use, and makes excellent quality images. Furthermore, it works with vector graphics pictures, which, unlike bitmaps, retain their clarity when you magnify them. The only drawback is that Inkscape has several compatibility issues with other programs that use bitmap images, like PowerPoint, Paint, and Photoshop, though you can export a bitmap copy of an Inkscape image and import other bitmaps. Another flaw is that Inkscape has some trouble uploading text to the wiki, but this can easily be fixed by converted said text to a path (Shift+Ctrl+C).
  • Side Note: Since Inkscape is complete EPIC FAIL at editing images, it only works for creating images from scratch. Paint and Photoshop are better for editing images, but Paint lacks any powerful tools besides Color Inversion, and Photoshop is rather complicated.
• An Image Generator that generates a "For Dummies" book cover. Like the out-of-place comb that comes along with your Spy Phone, you never know when you'll need it.
• Text-to-Binary, Octal, or Hexadecimal Converter -- Quite useful when trying to write one of the Antics Brothers' octal-code conversations.

Agent Johnson Recommends

• Mozilia Firefox and Safari are my faves As Web browsers. Safari can Be download here, and Firefox here.

• Linux / Unix users should use Firefox. Konquerer uses KDE, whatever that means.

Mac OS X should use Firefox or Safari.

• Mozilia Thunderbird and Yahoo! Mail are the best email clients.

• Leet translator.

• Know a little about History.

• Latin translator!

• Google Translate can translate languages. Very useful.

• As for search engines, it depends. For Firefox, you should keep the Firefox search engine, As it powered by Google. Google is the best search engine. Babylon is also powered by Google. Yahoo! or MSN are also good, I don't recomend it.

• Babylon is a very useful translator that can Be downloaded onto the Desktop.

Akbaboy's Recommendations

• Firefox is the browser that I use. Safari, Opera, and Google Chrome are good browsers if you want to try something else other than IE and Firefox.
• Google Translate is good when it comes to different languages. It is my main source for making words in Panertin. I combine Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Sometimes I use German, Italian, and English.
• 1337 is a language made. It is only used on the internet. I use the chart on that page. I always use the first letters.
• This website is where I get all those characters like: é, ã, and þ.
• Gimp is a clone of Photoshop. Unlike Photoshop, Gimp is free. I rarely use it for editing pictures for the wiki.
• Binary is a computer language. This website converts it into text and converts text into it. Try and decode this: 010010010010000001100001011011010010000001000001011010110110001001100001011000100110111101111001001011100010000001001001001000000110000101101101001000000101000001010111010011100111001101101111011011010110010100101110. (P.S. Don't decode this reminder or the period. Only the 0s and 1s.)
• This website does the same as the last website except that it does another language.

• Morse code was used to communicate with people. This is a translator.

XTUX345's Recommendations

• Google Chrome is my favourite web browser as it is very fast.
• I like to use Paint.NET and Gimp for image editing, but the newer version of Microsoft paint for Windows 7 is actually better for doing brushstrokes then the others.
• Windows 7 is my operating system of choice. When Google Chrome OS comes out that might be good.

Drawing things that make people go :3

• Adobe Illustrator CS4 - Vector style program used to draw things, examples of pictures drawn in Adobe Illustrator would be this
• Adobe Photoshop CS4 - Godsent. You can do numerous things with this. Examples of Photoshop pics would be this

Oh, and if you really want to get into the drawing scene...

• INTUOS4 Graphics Tablet (MUST BE BOUGHT, CAN'T TORRENT REAL LIFE OBJECTS LOL) - You hook it up onto your computer and you can draw on it like you would draw on normal pen and paper rather than lugging an XBOX HUEG mouse around as a replacement to pen and paper. You can also pick up a Bamboo Tablet if you're strapped for cash. Examples of pics drawn using a Graphics Tablet would be this (it might be expensive, but it makes people pull a HUEG :3 face)

Software that feels good man

• Firefox - Any browser that's not Internet Explorer I recommend. Personally, I use Firefox.
• Babelfish Translator - Decent translator, though sometimes inaccurate. Anything German you can ask me for a translation, but the rest I would suggest using Babelfish.
• Binary to English - This can be useful if you're writing a Mech related article, or anything to do with code.

• Pixlr: Best photo editor ever! It is ideal for simple logos. And it creates stuff!
