History[edit]
Derbazon started in 2011 to power large-scale cloud computation infrastructure. Andrew K. Rapone, a former organized crime figure, intentionally billed Derbazon as a way to get him out of the shadow he cast himself in. Derbazon's first product, the Derbazon Computing Instance, which is a "virtual" computer hosted on Derbazon infrastructure, launched with great fanfare, signing up thousands of customers within the first month of launch. Today, a large percentage of the Antarctic internet is run on Derbazon infrastructure.
Services provided[edit]
- Derbazon Computing Instance: Derbazon's most popular product, allowing someone to have a "virtual" computer in the cloud. It only supports Penguin OS.
- Derbazon Static Data Storage Service: Derbazon's storage solution intended for cloud service developers.
- Derbazon GiantDB: Derbazon's hosted database solution based on open-source software.
Controversy and criticism[edit]
As a service provider, it has faced criticism for allowing fraud, participating in political network management, and its well-known outages.
Fraud[edit]
Derbazon is often criticized for just being a front to the Working Penguins Network and thus the UPM itself, with rampant credit card fraud charges. Most credit card fraud is not committed by Andrew, but rather via many of the Antarctic crime rings, which includes the Working Penguins Network. Derbazon servers pump out a large proportion of the spam on the Antarctic internet, making the spread of viruses like the McDoodle's Virus much easier.
Political network management[edit]
Due to Derbazon's control of most of the Antarctic internet, Derbazon has wide control over who can access content. While Derbazon's networking engineers usually block traffic on abuse and technical merits, at times they have blocked entire countries, drawing even the ire of the USA.
Outages[edit]
- In July 2011, Derbazon had a mass-outage in all datacenters except one availability zone in Batavia. The services providing auto scale were rushing to spawn instances there and there was soon no more computation capacity available. The outage took 3 days to resolve, and when it was over, another occurred related to transferring some corrupted images and trying to start those. This problem was resolved quickly, however.
- In December 2011, Derbazon's datacenters except for the USA and Castillian ones lost power. Again, this took several days to resolve, but this time there was still computation capacity still available.
- In June 2012, a Derbazon datacenter in the USA lost power. Most of Derbazon's customers used this datacenter. This outage was notable for taking almost three days to resolve, while Derbazon's PR department essentially working fulltime to control the damage.
- In August 2013, another outage (that was network related) took place and lasted approximately 15 hours, impacting connectivity to many providers, including Yow Access (the only internet provider in the Yow Islands), drawing the ire of the partitioned Yow countries.
