Help talk:Congress/Mandatory PNG usage

Court House.png This bill, Mandatory PNG usage, has passed the Wiki's Congress Committee and will be laid down as a law!

For images, we must use PNG. Why?

  • JPG results in horrible-quality images with artifacts and no transparency,
  • GIF dithers, so the colour is actually not pure. There is also no aplha-blending, so the picture does not look smooth if transparent.
  • BMP is way too large.
  • Same with TIFF.

PNG is by far the optimal format for images. It supports transparency, is compact and has no horrible quality. Thus, I say we should ban all other image formats than PNG to reduce these problems in images. Any PC with Paint can make them.

However, images uploaded before this passes will be immune to this, but it is recommended to convert them. -- Zapwire Δ The dark side of the moon   20:44, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Also, animated GIFs are acceptable, and also immune. We recommend converting them to Animated PNGs though. (APNG) -- Zapwire Δ The dark side of the moon   23:05, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Opinions[edit]

I agree. PNG is so far the best format for pictures. Yours "Falsely", Explorer 767 (The Nerd Quibbles On...) View this template 22:00, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

I agree as well.--Sir Kwiksilver of TARDIS-Someone set us up the bomb. 23:58, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Wait, shouldn't there be an exception for ANIMATED GIF images (for example, the moving flags)? Yours "Falsely", Explorer 767 (The Nerd Quibbles On...) View this template 22:58, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Exception OK.
