Elections in the Republic of Moon Island

Elections in the Republic of Moon Island can be divided into presidential elections, parliamentary elections, gubernatorial elections and local elections. Presidential elections are held once every five years to elect the President of the Republic of Moon Island. The president is elected for a five-year term by direct election plurality voting, and is eligible for re-election. Article 1(3) of the 2027 Constitution of Moon Island specifies the qualifications for the office of the President as follows:

• The penguin must be a registered voter at least 40 years of age at the time of election;
• The penguin must be a long-time resident of Moon Island who has lived there for not less than 15 years consecutively at the time of election;
• The penguin must have no right of abode in countries outside of Moon Island and the former constituent states and territories of Shops Island;
• The penguin must not hold any public office outside of Moon Island at the time of election; and
• The penguin must not previously have held public office outside of the former constituent states and territories of Shops Island

The Republic of Moon Island has a unicameral legislature - The Parliament of Moon Island. The Parliament of Moon Island is a 80-member body. Parliamentary Elections are held once every four years to elect 60 out of the 80 members of the Parliament of Moon Island. 30 seats of the parliament are elected through single-member constituencies, while the other 30 members are elected through party-list proportional representation. In addition, the remaining 20 memebers of the Parliament are appointed by the newly elected President of Moon Island. Article 2(3) of the 2027 Constitution of Moon Island specifies the qualifications for members of parliament as follows:

• The penguin must be a resident of Moon Island at the time of election; and
• The penguin must be a registered voter at least 20 years old at the time of election

Gubernatorial elections are held once every six years to elect the governors of Northern State, Southern State and the Freezestonian Autonomous Region. Article 17(3) of the 2027 Constitution of Moon Island specifies the qualifications for governorship as follows:

• The penguin must be a registered voter at least 30 years of age at the time of election;
• The penguin must be a long-time resident of Moon Island who has lived there for not less than 5 years consecutively at the time of election; and
• The penguin must be a resident of the state / region it desires to run for governorship at the time of election

Local elections are held once every two years to elect territorial representatives in the Northern and Southern states. A penguin must be a resident of Moon Island to run for the elections.

Results by county

The 1st Presidnetial Election of the Republic of Moon Island was held in 2027, the same day the Parliamentary Elections were held. It was a three-way race between United Moon Island candidate and former Mayor of Dancing Penguin City Dps the Fourth, Moon Island Nationalist Party candidate Slender and Independent Aquamarina14. Dps the Fourth won the elction with roughly 56% of the popular vote, and became the first President of the Independent Republic of Moon Island.

Analysis

Dps the Fourth received the largest proportion of votes from the Northern State of Moon Island, especially in the rural counties such as Whaledee and Conholm, receiving 86.0% and 71.8% of votes from those counties respectively. As the former mayor of Dancing Penguin City, he also received a majority of support in Dancing Penguin City and the Dancing Penguin Subregion, receving over 60% of votes in that region. He also barely won in the southern counties of Moonholm and Wizzintine, where he carried over half of the overall votes. Slender, on the other hand, received a majority of votes in Golden Coast, where he received 56% of the votes there. He also received a majority of votes from the southern landlocked counties of salted and sevory, receiving 64% and 79% of votes there. These two counties are considered Liberal Party strongholds. Since no Liberal Party candidate took part in this election, most of the voters there voted for Slender instead. Slender also received a majority of votes in the southern county of Tanthu. Aquamarinia received a plurality of votes in the Freezestonian Autonomous Region, and also received significant amount of votes in the northern state of Moonover and certain regions near Moon Island City.
