The Shopper Broadcasting Service, also commonly abbreviated as the SBS is the largest television broadcaster in Shops Island. It was founded by a government initiative and has since gained great popularity, becoming a tenant of Shopper culture and entertainment. A large portion of funding for the SBS comes from private shareholders.
History[edit]
The SBS was founded in October 2012 as the Shopper people were swept up in a wave of government reforms. At this time, president Bro and a member of the Shops Island Council, Welcome00, decided to create a government-funded television channel to provide accurate news and journalism to the people. At the time, media in Shops Island was becoming more and more polarized, and began to show greater bias than ever before. Welcome00 claimed that it was an "affront to knowledge and intellectualism". The SBS was created to combat this, and was given strict regulations regarding journalistic integrity. Even to this day, the SBS is known throughout Antarctica for its relatively objective and comprehensive news coverage.
Television[edit]
SBS Television mainly regards news and Shopper politics, for which it is a foremost source in Shops Island. The SBS' news is known for being mostly unbiased and is congratulated for its comprehensive investigative journalism, which has tackled many domestic Shopper and international issues. SBS journalists dedicate themselves often to exposing the wrongs on the Shopper political, economic, or cultural landscape through a program called Limelight.
The SBS, on a separate channel, also hosts a variety of entertainment and comedy shows. They are largely low-budget productions but are still seen as quality broadcasting by many Shoppers. Ironically, many of these comedy shows specialize in satire and are known for endlessly attacking the Shopper government and its policies, even if it's just joking.
Radio[edit]
SBS Radio is the largest radio station in Shops Island, and is by default available on all radios operating within Shopper territory on either AM or FM frequency. It is regarded as dull by many. SBS radio focuses specifically on objective news and weather updates; it doesn't have entertainment, music, or investigative journalism like its television counterpart.
Criticism[edit]
The SBS is criticized mainly by the right wing for two main reasons. Conservatives state that the SBS has an inherent liberal bias in its research. While the SBS obviously says this isn't true, their broadcasting clearly does show a greater criticism of conservative politicians and conservative policies in comparison to that of their liberal counterparts. The right wing, and even some left wingers, believe that the SBS is also a great waste of taxpayer money and that it should either be abolished or privatized.
Trivia[edit]
- The SBS does not end up turning any profit; all revenue brought in goes to private shareholders, which has become a widely attacked aspect of SBS operations.
- This is a parody of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
