"Similes and Metaphors" is a hip hop song by Nyninyne that features fellow hip hop and Terrain grime artists DJ Crow, Nebulent, Bananaphone, Beetle and GGD. Parts of the song were recorded from 2007 to 2010, and then was leaked onto the Internet on July 11, 2011. The instrumental was produced by Tim and Tom in early 2008. Literally the song talks about how lyrics in songs are underestimated and how mainstream songs revolve around a hook/chorus. After the leak of the song, instead of the record label hurrying to release it before the leak spread around even more, they waited and requested Bananaphone and DJ Crow to put the song on their latest albums. The song is track 14 on Tha Bananaphone and is included on the Deluxe Edition of Underworld's Sequel.

Background[edit]

The instrumental was produced by Tim and Tom in early 2008 who gave it to Nyninyne. The rapper had recorded a verse in July 2007, which was then archived. He took out out and noticed that it went with the instrumental Tim and Tom had given to him. Tim and Tom mixed Nyninyne's verse and the instrumental together and then the song was archived again, with Tom saying to Nyninyne that they would rework the instrumental (as they thought it needed to sound more hip hop). Nebulent heard it from Nyninyne in mid 2009 and wrote/recorded a verse. Then in October 2010, Nyninyne contacted Nebulent about the song, requesting him to get more artists to feature. DJ Crow, Beetle and GGD were added to the song. The recording for the song had been complete. Later on in June 2011, Bananaphone wanted to create a remix of the song. He wrote a verse and added himself in the song and sent it to Nyninyne, who finalized Bananaphone's version instead of the one without Bananaphone.

Leaked version[edit]

On the last day of recording, the Wi-Fi in the studio was turned on. Somehow a hacker outside the studio connected and hacked the Wi-Fi and managed to extract the song from the studio into their own computer, who then anonymously released it onto the Internet the same day. "Similes and Metaphors" was spread all across the Internet. The hacker did not know that the version leaked was not the final version. Upon the news of the leak, Nyninyne said: "I really hate it when a cirpky does that. It annoys me. I want to find the penguin that done this." He then decided to talk about the song: "The version leaked is not the official and final version. Tim and Tom have produced it but are going to be remastering it, which they have planned to do it ever since I first came up with the song idea, which was way back in July 2007. I wrote and recorded a verse and Tim and Tom sent an instrumental. I contacted others throughout the years who contributed." DJ Crow said: "I was wanting a special premiere for this song but some wasteman decided to hack. The song talks about the stereotypical lyrics in songs and hooks, which is something I go very deep in."

Album releases[edit]

When asked about the song becoming a single, Nyninyne said: "I'm not sure, we're 70% sure that we won't release it as a single - it's gonna be one of those special non-single songs, so probably not." Instead, the song was added onto three albums - Tha Bananaphone as track 14, The Return of Nebulent and Underworld's Sequel as a Deluxe Edition extra. Since many did not buy the Deluxe Edition, the song was bought separately from digital download. Because of the three-album releases, the song became quite famous; despite not being a single. It charted just inside Top 40 and Top 100 charts. It charted quite high in UnitedTerra for a song - entering at number 19 and staying in the Top 40 for four weeks.
